It's inevitable, I can feel it. I am proud to say that I was one of thousands who marched last night in protest of Prop8. It was a really inspiring experience for me. I've never been to a protest/rally/march. Just ... to be in that giant group of people was galvanizing. I know it's San Francisco, and of course thousands of people think Prop8 is a bad idea, but still. Rallies like this are going on all over the state. There is a rally in Sacramento tomorrow that I wish I could go to, but I refuse to pay Amtrak $42 to go to Sacramento and back. I will be there in spirit though.

We shall overcome.

I have a confession: Whenever I see the abbreviation "lb.", in my head I pronounce it as "libs", not "pounds".

First of all, let me say that I am happy Obama won. But I am Not Happy. In fact, I'm angry!

So I'm going to do something about it.

I'm sure all of you know that Proposition 8, the ban on gay marriage, has passed in California. That such a thing would pass, by no matter how slim a margin, fills me with an almost incoherent rage. I AM SO ANGRY!! I want to do something. I want to riot. I want to march on Washington D.C. I want to have a sit-in. I want to do something that will make everyone sit up and take notice. I want everyone in this damn country to hear my voice and know exactly how angry I really am.

However, quitting my job and walking to D.C. probably won't help anything. So I'm starting with the least I can do, which is write letters. I am going to write a letter every month to the President, my Senators, and my House Representative. I am going to write them letters until they are sick of reading my letters. I am going to be so annoying that they will put this into law just so that I will stop writing letters, and I am asking all of you to do the same. I want to be so noisy that we drown out the bigots, and the hate-mongerers, the homophobes, and the conservative religious right. Can we do that? YES WE CAN.

I hope people realize that just getting Obama elected was the easy part. Now we really have to buckle down and WORK. This is not the time to sit back and let someone else take care of the problem. This is the time to get involved. This is not the time to say, "Yes, we did it." It is the time to say, "Yes, we are doing it! We will do it!"

So, for the 10 people who read my blog, and live in the United States, please consider taking this on with me. But I will do it on my own if I have to. I will do whatever I can to make sure that the 10% of our population who worked so hard, and gave so much money, and fought SO HARD to get this man elected with me can have the same rights that the other 90% currently enjoy. Remember, separate is not equal. We all deserve the same rights, and anyone who says differently is, as Rodney McKay would say, "Wrong, wrong, WRONG."

Here is my letter to the president-elect. Feel free to use it as a template, or to write your own.

Dear President Obama:

First of all, I would like to congratulate you on your decisive victory November 4th. I avidly watched the numbers roll in that night, and my hope rose with them. I truly do believe you will make a positive difference, not only in our country, but in our world.

However, my elation over your victory was tainted by the success of Proposition 8 in California. Proposition 8 will amend the Californian Constitution to exclude same sex couples from marriage. To have such a hateful and discriminatory proposition pass, even by a small margin, is devastating. I know that similar propositions passed in Florida and Arizona, and gay couples were banned from adopting children in Arkansas.

This is a disturbing and growing trend in states across the nation, and I believe it is time for the federal government to step in, as it has done in the past over other civil rights issues. We never would have had de-segregation and votes for women if the federal government had left it up to the states to decide. So please, I am asking you to end the apathy from the federal government on this issue and take a stand for civil liberties for all Americans, not just a select population, whether they be the majority or the minority.

I am asking you to do this for our friends and family, our neighbors, our doctors, our teachers, our police officers and our fire fighters, our soldiers, our colleagues, and our children. I am asking you to do this for all Americans, because if we deny rights to one of us, we are all the lesser for it.
