Kirk Janes, RIP

Our friend and one helluva guy, Kirk, died in the line of courier duty on May 21st.

Anyone who had a chance to know him, even briefly, knew instantly what a good, kind soul he was. Our love goes out to him, his friends and family.

On May 22, a memorial was created at Steiner and Fulton and on May 28. the traditional courier memorial ride was conducted.

Once again, R.I.P., Kirk — arguing over Trivial Pursuit, kicking ass at pool and bowling and drinking your beer... you'll be missed, man.

RIP Tristram Cary

The father of electronic music wore tweed jackets, had a refined English accent and smoked a pipe.

Tristram Cary, who has died in Adelaide, aged 82, came up with the idea of electronic and tape music while a naval radar officer during World War II.

Mr Cary is renowned for composing the theme for the television sci-fi series Dr Who and co-designing a synthesiser used by rock artists including Pink Floyd, The Who and Roxy Music.

He founded the electronic music studio at London's Royal College of Music in 1967 and, seven years later, migrated to Australia to establish a similar studio at the University of Adelaide's Elder Conservatorium of Music.

The conservatorium's head of music technology studies, Stephen Whittington, said Mr Cary's contribution to music was "impossible to quantify".

"He laid the foundations," Mr Whittington said today.

"Without him, we wouldn't have techno, hip-hop or any kind of music which is sustained by technology."

Is it wrong that I missed church on Easter Sunday because I spent the night before downing double ryes and shooting pool in tribute to a dead friend?

Yesterday I started to put on my "fat" jeans (jeans that are too big for you so you feel safe not exposing any kind of muffin top on those bloated days) and I actually ripped off the belt loop when I was putting them on!

I've had those jeans for at least 7 years. They saw through many a slobby days and ice cream nights. That's the longest relationship I've ever had.

I guess I'm reduced to sweat pants now.

I guess that last saving throw failed. RIP Gary Gygax
